The Writer’s Dossier 4/10/2025 – The big Holly Myers interview

DOSSIER: Regarding your process for delivering exceptional quality in your audiobook narration, how many times do you read through the book and how much book/author research do you do before you hit that record button?

MYERS: I’ve learned that a one-size-fits-all prep method doesn’t always apply. While some require a full read through, most often I don’t do a full read-through or even a super-detailed skim—my process involves scanning ahead just enough to stay oriented while letting the story unfold naturally during recording. That element of surprise keeps the performance fresh and alive.

I do take notes and record sample clips of character voices to stay consistent, especially in dialogue-heavy scenes. And if I have the opportunity to speak with the author beforehand, I always take it. Narration is a partnership—I bring my own perspective, but I also want to understand the author’s vision. That collaboration can bring out incredible moments in a story.

As for researching the author or book beforehand—I prefer to let the book speak for itself. Every story has its own rhythm, even when it comes from the same brain.

She’s got style … and range

DOSSIER: Although you skillfully craft your narration around your interpretation of each book character, do you have a particular style you save for certain kinds of books or specific authors you work with on a regular basis?

MYERS: I’ve found my stride in thrillers and mysteries so far, but what I really love is when a book lets me stretch and explore my full vocal range. My narration style leans into nuance and emotional layering, but I also love getting gritty or playful when the story calls for it (i.e. romance, erotica).

I’ve heard my voice described as having a smooth, steady intensity. I feel there is a quiet confidence to it, a kind of immersive presence that works well in darker fiction or high-stakes
drama. Knowing when pause, when to drop my tone, and how to let a moment breathe. So whether it’s sultry, sharp, or grounded and warm—I try to meet the story where it lives.

How I get hired

DOSSIER: Can authors request that you narrate their book? How would that work?

MYERS: Yes, definitely! Authors or publishers can reach out to me directly at hollymyersvoice.com. If you have a story you’re excited about, let’s talk! I’m always open to new projects and love bringing an author’s work to life.

A big lesson

DOSSIER: What’s the biggest message writers (or listeners) need to hear from audiobook narrators about the whole audiobook process that would help you produce the best possible rendition?

MYERS: I once accidentally butt-dialed a former colleague while recording erotica. They claim they “didn’t hear much”—and I really hope they’re telling the truth!

Get in the zone

DOSSIER: When are you at your best in the booth? Morning, afternoon, or night? Do you have a particular routine, requirement, or practice that helps you operate at the top of your game?

MYERS: I’m usually in the zone mid-morning through late afternoon—but for darker or more intense material, I love recording later at night. There’s something about nighttime energy that adds a little extra edge.

As for rituals—honestly, I’m still figuring mine out! I don’t do a full-on warm up (unless yelling at the kids to make sure they don’t miss the bus counts?), but I’m experimenting with what works for me. I look forward to silencing device notifications during recording sessions – it allows me to escape from the tether of constant interruptions and really focus on my work.

Narrating rarely feels like work for me and I love that there’s always more to learn. Every project helps me grow, and I try to bring that same curiosity and openness into the booth with me.

Bonus Question

DOSSIER: What’s the biggest message writers need to hear from audiobook narrators about the whole audiobook process that would help you produce the best possible rendition?

MYERS: At the end of the day, I want the author to press play and say, ‘Yes. That’s it.’ To make that happen requires collaboration and feedback.  More than just a “you’re doing great!” – but not being afraid to request modification. I always appreciate when the collaboration between the author and narrator brings the finished product closer to that goal of being ‘it’ for both of us – so authors, don’t be afraid to speak up!
